One who is spokesman for God (Exodus 4:15-16; 7:1) whether by vision or otherwise, and is given insight into the mind of God, and declares what he has "seen" as a message to the people. It is not the mysterious mode of reception of the prophetic revelation that is emphasized, but rather the deliverance of the message itself for God.
The spirit of the Prophecy is direct by the Holy Spirit, and mature Prophets can activate the gift on demand as the need arise. A true Prophet has his mind weaned and his spirit trained for clear hearing of the Voice of God. He knows who he is and where is capacity to perform.
2KI 3:15-18 But now bring me a harpist." While the harpist was playing, the hand of the LORD came upon Elisha and he said, "This is what the LORD says: Make this valley full of ditches.

There are two major types of Prophets :
1. Those who function in the GIFTS OF PROPHECY, ( also known as the sons of prophets they are plenty , they are like a sign post though they can give you a clear direction, but cannot guarantee your arrival at your future destiny . though they can prophesy into your life, but they cannot guarantee a safe arrival to your destiny
1SA 10:10 When they arrived at Gibeah, a procession of prophets met him; the Spirit of God came upon him in power, and he joined in their prophesying.
1SA 19:20 so he sent men to capture him. But when they saw a group of prophets prophesying, with Samuel standing there as their leader, the Spirit of God came upon Saul's men and they also prophesied.
2. There are those that function at the Office of the Prophet, They are referred to as SEER in Old Testament or the MAN OF GOD. Not only they can prophesy over your life and give you a clear direction but God has equipped with the Anointing to make things happen. They can function in all 9 gifts of the spirit freely. Especially in the Gift of wisdom, knowledge and understanding, mighty and Miracles. They have power to change nations and change leaders, Just like Samuel, Elijah, and Elisha. They advice kings and people in higher authority and those involved in great things (1Ki 22:6-28; 2Ki 6:9-12; Isa 37:2-3; Jer 27:12-15)
2KI 6:9-10 The man of God sent word to the king of Israel: "Beware of passing that place, because the Arameans are going down there." So the king of Israel checked on the place indicated by the man of God. Time and again Elisha warned the king, so that he was on his guard in such places.
They have power to train and equip. Mostly they are born, Can inherit or by Transfer these gifts and are activated by a great obedience.
